Active solar thermal systems are used for general space heating and water heating. Active systems use pumps and fans to regulate and distribute the energy collected from the sun. Systems are simple, and include one or more flat plate collectors which are connected to a storage and distribution system.

Passive systems provide the same heating types, but differ in that they do not store or distribute or use pumps or fans. Passive systems use natural heat transfer forces of conduction, convection and radiation to distribute the collected heat.
